Exhibition Kostanjevica na Krki – Monastery (EŠD 265)

EŠD 265 is the title under which former Cistercian monastery, now a museum, is named in the Registry of the cultural heritage that is conducted by the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Slovenia. The exhibition offers an insight into several decades-long restoration operations and almost hundred years long history of exploration of this exceptional cultural monument in which the quality of architectural elements was uncovered and revealed. The former monastery is therefore important segment of wider European cultural heritage. The display showcases the brief historical overview of the monastery, followed by the presentation of the restoration of the former monastery church and the entire complex. The special emphasis is on the architectural sculpture of the former monastery church which is on display “in situ”, and also with the exhibited original materials in the gallery space, such as bases, columns, capitals, joints, arches and ribs.

The exhibition offers an insight into the efforts that were invested in the protection and restoration of this cultural monument throughout the 20th century, especially in the past 60 years. The former monastery complex is now transformed into a museum – Galerija Božidar Jakac that is responsible with its programme for already 50 years for contemporary revitalisation of this magnificent architecture.
