Galerija Božidar Jakac – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art was founded in 1974 when the first permanent exhibitions of Tone Kralj and Božidar Jakac were open for public in the building of the former Cistercian monastery in Kostanjevica na Krki.

Permanent displays of Galerija Božidar Jakac are organised in individual galleries that showcase works of prominent Slovenian artists: France Kralj, Božidar Jakac, France Gorše, Tone Kralj, Nande Vidmar, Jože Gorjup, Zoran Didek, Bogdan Borčić, Janez Boljka. Furthermore, the permanent displays include Pleterje Collection of European Painters and Collection of Gorjup Gallery which is located in the building of the Kostanjevica na Krki primary school.
