FORMA
VIVA

More than 100 sculptures that are on display in the immediate surroundings of the museum and in other locations across the town of Kostanjevica na Krki, were created in the period 1961-1988, and after a short hiatus again biannually since 1998 at the International Symposium of Sculptors Forma viva, with international participation of sculptors from all over the world. The sculptures, which are created by the participants over a period of one month, remain in their natural environment. They are created almost exclusively from oak wood, which is a typical material for this geographical area.

Forma Viva / History

The International Symposium of Sculptors Forma Viva was initiated in 1961 by sculptors Jakob Savinšek and Janez Lenassi, first in Seča by Portorož and in Kostanjevica na Krki, and was later also held in two more localities. Depending on the available material, the Forma viva sculptures in Kostanjevica na Krki are created in oak wood, in Seča by Portorož in stone, in Ravne na Koroškem in metal and in Maribor in concrete. In the early years, the event in Kostanjevica na Krki took place every year, but it slowed down after 1966 to become a biennial, and eventually went into hiatus in 1988. At the end of the 1980s, Forma viva ceased to operate everywhere except in Seča. After ten years of dormancy, Forma viva in Kostanjevica na Krki resumed in 1998 and has been held biennially up to this day.

    Viva in forma

Mirko Bratuša (1963) is a visual artist who mainly works with sculpture. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 1989, and then specialised at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1990–1992) and the Düsseldorf Academy of Art (1993). Since 1997 he has been teaching at the Department of Art Pedagogy at the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana. In his practice, he uses a wide variety of materials, techniques and concepts in the spirit of postmodernism. He lives and works in Ljubljana.

Sculptor Mirko Bratuša has placed two sculptures on the Baroque façade of the former monastery church, which refer to the legend of the founding of the Kostanjevica monastery. The figures of the two key monastery founders, Duke Bernard Spanheim and the Wild Man, are created in a grotesque manner typical of the artist. With their humorous appearance, the statues allude to the fine line between mythology and history and highlight the popular need to create stories.

    Fragment

Péter Gálhidy (1974) is a visual artist working with sculpture and spatial installations. He graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 1999, where he has been teaching since 2001, and is currently the Head of the Sculpture Department there. His artistic practice usually uses organic, natural materials, while his conceptual focus is on interpreting questions of space, matter and natural balance. He lives and works in Budapest.

Péter Gálhidy's composite sculpture reproduces the organic natural forms of blades of grass, which the artist presents in a characteristic monumental light. In his artistic practice, Gálhidy often traces the amorphous forms of vegetation, reflecting his search for links (and gaps) between natural habitats and anthropogenic structures. His sculpture, which refers to the rural area of the Krka valley, simultaneously demonstrates a sensitivity to natural habitats and to the environmental challenges of the modern age.
