Children and families

Learning / Children and families

The museum, located in the impressive building of the former monastery, is a place where families can spend their leisure time in a relaxed atmosphere, discovering the stories behind the artworks, learning about the history of the former monastery complex and getting in touch with the cultural heritage presented in the museum or on display in the Forma viva sculpture park. The park surrounding the museum is a pleasant environment for a walk among the wooden sculptures and for getting to know the works of art in nature.

With ten permanent displays and at least three temporary exhibitions, we advise you to ask the museum staff upon your arrival which contents are best suited to visit with children. It can take several hours to discover the museum exhibits. You can find a place to relax in the park or in the courtyard of the museum.

If you are visiting the museum on a Saturday morning, there is a good chance to catch free intergenerational creative workshops. Therefore, you shall check the event announcement.

Holiday Activities in the Museum

During the school holidays, children are invited to discover the stories behind the works of art, learn about the history and about the former monastery complex, take part in research activities in the Forma viva sculpture park and attend various workshops.

The summer holidays are particularly varied, with an annual summer sculpture workshop, a holiday day care for children and other activities in the museum and park, organised in cooperation with other institutions.

Summer Sculpture Workshop

The first week of the summer holidays at the museum is traditionally reserved for a sculpture workshop, which has been led by art teacher Valter Rabič for many years now. The workshop is aimed at children aged 7 to 15. On Monday, the participants conceive an idea for a sculpture, followed by intensive creative work in various sculptural techniques until Friday, when the exhibition opens in the courtyard. Visitors who come to the museum in the summer are always impressed by the originality and quality of the artworks.

Summer Holidays at the Museum

We organise full-day activity programmes for children aged 6 to 11 years, on one or more dates during the summer holidays. A large part of the day is spent with the children in the park under the shade of the lime trees in the courtyard.

Family Day at GBJ

Every year, one of the Saturdays in May or June is dedicated to a varied programme for families. Alongside creative workshops, family explorations and games, we invite musicians, puppeteers, theatre artists and other creators to provide a wide variety of experiences under the lime trees in the courtyard.
