IGOR LUMPERT’S RADIUM BATH: Fight Songs

Saturday, 12 July 2025, at 8pm

The concert of the jazz ensemble Igor Lumpert’s Radium Bath (Igor Lumpert and Georg Vogel) in the courtyard of Galerija Božidar Jakac – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will present the unique project entitled Fight Songs, in which Igor Lumpert and his fellow musicians continue to explore themes such as tension, struggle and liberation in a highly expressive and improvised form. In this ensemble Lumpert has assembled an international crew of experienced and virtuoso jazz musicians.

With the Fight Songs project, Lumpert continues and upgrades on his long-standing music career, in which he combines a deep knowledge of the jazz tradition and the exploration of new musical impulses. This project, which is based on the previous album I Am the Spirit of the Earth and was premiered at Jazz Cerkno Festival in May this year, also establishes a unique artistic expression in which the artist combines tradition and a contemporary avant-garde approach.

Igor Lumpert’s music is a unique blend of the hypnotic rhythms and modal melodies of his native Slovenia, merged with the bold spirit of exploration of the contemporary jazz traditions. His work has been widely recognised for its innovative fusion of various musical traditions and exploration of new expressive possibilities. As Todd Barkan, the recipient National Endowment for the Arts and Master of Jazz, points out: “Igor’s focus on free jazz is based on a deep knowledge of the entire musical tradition. His compositions evoke echoes of Ellington, Roscoe Mitchell and Bartók, and his playing reflects his understanding of Coltrane and Ben Webster.” This profound connection to the history of jazz, together with his exploratory approach and ability to push boundaries, defines Lumpert’s unique sound and his significant contribution to the genre.
