Invitation to the opening of the Slovenian section of the international hiking trail: Cistercian Way

Date: 30. 09. 2024
Time: 11:00

The Cistercian Way is an international hiking trail of more than 6,300 kilometres, linking the monastic landscapes of six European countries, taking hikers into unspoilt wilderness, cultural landscapes and heritage sites. Seventeen partners from five countries (Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Slovenia) have, as part of the Cisterscapes project, studied and explored in detail the traces left by the Cistercians in the cultural landscape over the centuries. Their economic activity in particular has marked the surroundings of the monasteries in which they lived.

The former Cistercian monastery in Kostanjevica na Krki is an excellent starting point for exploring the rich legacy of the Cistercians, as it is the starting point of a section of the international hiking trail linking the project partners from the south to the north of Europe. You can discover the traces of the monks on the one-day circular trail that winds around Kostanjevica na Krki, or you can set off on the scenic four-day trail linking Kostanjevica na Krki and Stična.

The Cistercian Way heads towards Cîteaux in Burgundy, France, the origin of the Cistercian monastic order, and follows existing hiking trails linking 17 Cistercian monastic landscapes, with no special markings. Maps, gpx files and information about the International Cistercian Way are available on the website www.cisterscapes.eu and on the Outdooractive app.

You are kindly invited to join the official opening of the Kostanjevica segment of the Slovenian section of the international hiking trail, the Cistercian Way.

The opening will take place in the parking place of the Božidar Jakac Art Museum on 30 September 2024 at 11:00.

The official opening will be followed by a guided hike through Kostanjevica na Krki with stops at Cistercian cultural landscape points and a lunch. The route is not difficult and will take an estimated 3 hours.

Registration for the guided hike is being collected at info@galerija-bj.si until 20.9.2024.
