Tone Kralj painter, graphic artist and sculpturor, was first introduced to art by his older brother France. Between 1920 and 1923 he studied in Prague and later improved his studies in Vienna, Paris and Venice. In Rome he also studied architecture. Towards the end of the 20's he worked closely with his brother France, and then he developed his style of monumental realism. In his permanent retrospective collection, aprroximately 100 pieces are exhibited. In his earlier works, which show reflections of the works of that time from Vienna, actually European art, prevail soft, successive line, motifs which are expressively symbolic (Sunset of Life, 1921). In later works, parallelly with changes of themes, there is also change in style. Figures stand strong, in one way robust (Pieta, 1934) with composition projects and remaining art elements, they give a specific style type. Many times it has been mentionned that Tone Kralj in his creations tried to please the tastes of simple people. Certain themes continued throughout his creations, alongside family portraits (Self-portrait with wife, 1932), he also captures historical farmer rebellions and war scenes (graphic art), farmer and worker life (Miner's mother, 1937) and biblical scenes (Salome, 1922, Judith, 1934). This exhibition has been on view since 1974. |
