The Pleterje Collection of
Old Masters
Jeremiah - detail

Works of art which are exhibited at the Pleterje Collection of Old Masters are the properties of the nearby Pleterje monastery. Because the maintenance and security of the art work was too burdeness for the monastery, they on inititation of, at that time, Prior Janez Drolc, who wanted the art works shown to a wider public audience, the collection was transported to the Bozidar Jakac Gallery. After three years of preparation and restoration, under professor Viktor Povse, the collection first opened in 1977. Later, painitings were once again restored and the exhibition location was renovated. The new collection opened in 1992. The style and quality is quite varied, but at least the collection has left behind a turbulent past. The majority of the paintings probably came to the property of the monastery at Bosserville, no earlier than the 19th century. In Slovenia they were brought in 1904 by the Bosserville monks from Alsace. In 1902 the monks were dismissed and offered refuge at Pleterje by Franz Joseph. Details about the pictures due to insufficient archive sources are very modest and because of this the art work has still not been entirely researched. At the moment 44 oil paintings are being exhibited, originating from the 17th and 18th centuries, which are attributed to the Flemish, French, Italian and German Masters. From the whole, by quality the best works seem to be Jeremiah Orders to Hide the Holy Fire, which has been recently ascertained as being probably a work of a Master from the Genoa school in the second half of the 17th century and Ecstasy of Saint Bruno, created by the painter Fillipo Lauri. The known series Pleterje Apostles painted in van Dyck style, is recognized as the work of three masters.
