Kostanjevica on the river Krka
is located with its old town centre on an artificial islet in the meander of the Krka
river, at the foot of the Gorjanci hills. It developed near the castle Landestrost, which
was a former Spanheim frontier fortress. It was first mentionned in 1220 as a seat of a
parish. In 1252 Kostajevica obtained its town rights. The town structure with its two
streets has remained to today. The town has been proclaimed a cultural monument. Due to
numerous floods, the town has been nicknamed "Venice of the Lower Carniola".
Visitors can view cultural monuments and art collections in Kostanjevica in which they are
able to draw parallels with Venice. Other tourist attractions in Kostanjevica on the river Krka
are, Kostanjevica Cave, Krakovski woodland complex, rowing on the river Krka, fishing,
hunting, cycling, and fine restaurant and pub services. |
